The Metal Muses
The Shet’zen disdained the very progression of life. When they marched against the heavens, they conquered more than the gods—they conquered death itself. In the world before Shet’zen rule, the souls of the dead had to make a pilgrimage to their final resting place, The Great Veil. The veil was no metaphor, no spiritual legend, it was a physical gate linking the world of the living to the world of the dead. For millennia, the the Temple of the Veil was guarded by immortal paragons of the living world. The Shet’zen slew them with a word and sealed the gate for eternity.
Now the souls of the dead wander the earth endlessly. Too often they become tethered to the sites where they die, acting with indiscriminate malevolence towards all they encounter. Dozens of ghost-laden battlegrounds lie in The Outlands between the seven nations.
